Billiards is a game whose creation has often been attributed to the British, with Snooker having been created by British Army officers stationed in India during 1874 to 1875. Pool, or "pocket billiards" is the American version of the game and is the most widely played cue sport in the world today.
Snooker is still an attractive and enjoyable variation for our cousins across the pond, with many continuing to make snooker their alternative game of choice!
Like pool tables, snooker tables have six pockets in which to sink the balls. Minor differences include thinner cushions and more smoothly-curved pocket openings. The snooker balls themselves offer the biggest difference in the game. The balls are noticeably smaller than regular pool balls, 2-1/16" in diameter compared to 2-1/4".
Snooker balls are nut numbered, unlike their pool ball counterparts and a typical set of snooker balls will consist of 15 red balls, 6 coloured balls and the white cue ball which you use to strike the target balls. Coloured snooker balls consist of green, yellow, brown, pink, blue and black and each is worth a different set of points. The player who scores the most points wins
If you are interested in learning how to play snooker and are ready to invest in your own snooker table, snooker tables come in a whole array of size variations that often it is difficult to choose. The regulation size snooker table is the 12' x 6' and has 8 legs to support the additional weight. This snooker table requires a minimum room size of 22' x 16'.
The height of the table from the floor to the top of the cushion rail should measure 34". For the true British snooker-hall experience, this is the preferred size.
If you find that your family games room is too small for the 12 ' x 6', there are a whole range of snooker tables that come in different sizes, from 10' x 5'. 9' x 4.5', 8' x 4' and 6' x 3', they are always twice as long as they are wide. The experience will always be the same regardless of the size. If you find that space is really at a premium, there are snooker tables that even come in sizes like 4' x 2' and come in a variety of types, such as table top versions and fold-away snooker tables.
The popularity of snooker has continued to grow incrementally over the last few years. Already very popular in the UK and Ireland, snooker has even gained the devotion of enthusiasts as far afield as China and various other Far East countries, including the United States. The game of snooker has even gone virtual in that it has now reached mainstream video gaming systems, such as Nintendo Wii's WSC Real 09. But, it will take many years to beat the real thing!
